Celebrating Diwali as a Muslim

Share

Is it permissible for me as a Muslim, to visit my friend’s house when they are celebrating stuff such as CNY or Diwali? Would this be considered shirk? I go there not to celebrate it but just to visit them the way they visit during Ramadan.

Salaam and Jummah Mubarak! Of course you can. Islam teaches us to respect all religions and cultures even if we don’t believe in them. In the Quran tolerance is viewed a necessary prerequisite for coexistence. It assumes social, cultural and religious differences that require toleration, even if these differences do not meet with the approval of the parties involved. Tolerance without greater acceptance indicates a sense of conditioned approval. Hope that helps.
