Q: I’m a revert, and my coworker is not well off. I bought their kids a fair bit of presents around the end of November, and they are using them as Christmas presents. I was wondering if this is considered haram or not if I do it next year.
A: That is beyond kind of you. Of course you should continue to give gifts next year. Your intention is pure, and iA, Allah (swt) will reward you for your efforts. You are also upholding the ties of kinship, which is very important in Islam.
This was explained by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he said: “The one who maintains a relationship with his relatives only because they maintain a relationship with him is not truly upholding the ties of kinship . The one who truly upholds those ties is the one who does so even if they break off the relationship.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari, 5645).
