Q: Salam, should sugar be considered haram? I see too many muslims having weight problems, partly due to those. I believe moderation is not good and sugar works and gets us addicted like alcohol. I wish most muslims agreed to condemn sugar. Peace be upon you.
A: Sugar is considered halal (permissible) in Islam because it is a pure plant-based food. I know it may be addicting, but anything can become addicting if a person abuses it. Also, although it might cause cravings, it does not change the mind or cause the severe intoxication associated with haram (prohibited) substances like alcohol. Islam classifies foods by their fundamental nature, making the substance itself halal.
